Probationary officers: Most of the banks have decided the qualification for these posts as 60% marks in Bachelors Degree. Some banks have set 55% marks as a qualification.  State Bank of India is asking for a good track record from 10th class to graduation.

Clerks:  55% marks in intermediate (60% for some banks) or a mere passing in the Bachelor degree is the qualification for these posts.  There is a relaxation in age limit and academic qualification for probationary officer and clerk categories as per the government rules.

Syllabus and preparation

The subjects for the probationary officers, clerical recruitment exams are same.  But they differ in the standards.  Clerical exam is of average standard and the questions in probationary officers exam is a bit difficult.

General English or Test of English Language: A candidate has to secure eligible marks in this test. The topics frequently asked in many bank exams are comprehension test, common errors, filling the blanks, jumbled sentence, jumbled words, spelling errors, phrase meaning and phrase replacement.  Comprehension test carries more weightage.  Of the total 50 questions asked, 15 are from comprehension.  A candidate who wants to get good score in English test has to be good in vocabulary and grammar.  To get good marks in vocabulary, prepare with approach to root, prefix, and suffix. To be successful in spotting the errors section knowledge in grammar is important.  Continuous practice is necessary to get a hold on grammar. Subject and verb are to be studies carefully. Speed reading also helps to shine in English. The speed of the reading should be 200 to 250 words.

Numerical ability/competitive aptitude: This section should be given more time when compared to other sections in the exams. Speed in solving a problem is important.  Computations are more. Learn tables, multiplications, divisions squares and cube values perfectly. This helps to answer questions asked in percentages, distance-time, loss-profit in stipulated time.  To be successful in data interpretation section learn charts, line graphs and bar graphs. To get through these tests continuous practice is the only solution.

Reasoning ability/test of reasoning

Academics do not teach this section in any stage.  Scoring marks in this section is easy if you have reasoning ability and critical analysis power.  Series, analogy, classifications, directions, blood relations, alphabetical orders, numbers are the important topics.  Coding, decoding, ranking, order of arrangement are also important.  Learn the places of English letters from first to last and last to first.

General awareness: General awareness section carries questions on social, financial and political current affairs. Candidates should have a thorough knowledge in economic matters as banking   field is related to financial section.   Budgets, credit policy, national economic surveys should be studied carefully. There is a chance of getting through in the clerical exam with objective model preparation, preparation for probationary officer exam should be different.

One should understand that there is a chance of asking general awareness questions in descriptive tests also.  One can score up to 70% marks if one pays attention to the sports-winners, awards-winners, important personalities and places.

Descriptive test: Ability to express ideas and that too in a perfect order of sentence making is two important features of descriptive test.  Hold on English grammar is also important.  Read the editorials in English news papers and try to write an essay on the related topic.
