French Government has established JIPMER in 1823. It came under possession of Indian              Government in 1956. This institute has been improved to offer post graduate medicine courses in 1964. JIPMER is one of the top 5 medical colleges in India. It is present in 195 acres in the present puducherry, earlier called Pondicherry.

There are about 28 academic divisions in JIPMER. It is offering under graduate, PG and super specialty courses in medicine. It has got a ……………………..1050 bedded hospital.

It also conducts nursing college. Poor people will always have medical services here. 19 divisions in PG and 16 divisions in super specialty are present. PhD can be done in 6 disciplines. All these are working under JIPMER only. Researches under Pondicherry University are also conducted in JIPMER because of presence of advanced research equipment and facilities here.  Medicine education and training will be on basics along with health improvement and disease prevention at Graduation level.

Students are trained in accordance to the standards prescribed by Medical Council of India. 25% of the PG seats in JIPMER are given to those who have done MBBS here.

Program contents and teaching methods will ensure strong foundations along with innovative concepts. JIPMER updates teaching and training regularly with small seminars, lectures and research experiences. It not only encourages innovative concepts but also initiates research regarding them.

College library starts working at 9 AM till 11 PM. Library and class rooms are totally facilitated with ACs. Trauma care centre, regional cancer centre and auditorium have been started. Newly CT scan, MRI, pet scan also have been inaugurated. They have started a new project called tele ophthalmology. As a part of it, medical staff will tour remote rural area and diagnose the eye disease patients. They are taken to hospital and full treatment will be provided.

Till recent years, JIPMER medical courses are conducted with affiliation of Pondicherry University. Recently JIPMER has got self deemed status. Courses here are recognized by Medical council of India. This institute runs under Director General of Health Services and is funded by Central ministry for family health.
