In Andhra Pradesh Rakhi Purnima is celebrated with sisters tying rakhi to their brothers. They give sweets to them.  Let us know what this festival is called in other states and how it is celebrated.

  • In Orissa, Rakhi festival is called ‘Grahma purnima’. The cows and oxen are decorated and worshipped.  They prepare a special sweet called ‘pitha’ and distribute it to families and friends.
  • This festival is called ‘Nariyal purnima’ in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa. They worship Varuna and Samudra for good rains. This is an important festival for fisher men as it sets a new fishing season.
  • People of Uttarakhand celebrate this festival with the name of ‘Janopunyu’. On this day they change their sacred threads. A big mela ‘Bagwal’ is celebrated in Champawat district on this day.
  • Rakhi festival is called ‘Kajari Purnima’ in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar states. This is an important festival for farmers and mothers who have a son.
  • In some parts of Gujarat this festival is celebrated in the name of ‘Pavitropana’. Lord Shiva is worshipped on this day.
