Obtain marriage certificate in Tamil Nadu

 

Marriage certificates for already registered marriages can be obtained in Tamil Nadu. Marriages are registered under Hindu Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act and under Tamil Nadu Registration marriage Act.

Marriage registration under Hindu Marriage Act

For registering marriages under Hindu Marriage Act in Tamil Nadu, the bride and bridegroom should have completed 18 and 21 years respectively. Both of them should be Hindus, Sikhs or Buddhists. They have to submit their proof or marriage in any form of either temple marriage receipts/wedding invitation or any other marriage solemnization proof. For registering and obtaining marriage certificate in a particular registering office, either the residence of bride/groom or the venue of marriage should fall in its jurisdiction. They also will have to submit ration card/driving licence/passport or visa as residence proof and birth certificate/school or college certificate/passport or visa as age proof certificate. In addition the above 4 passport size photograph of bride and bridegroom are also shall be submitted along with the application. Copies of marriage certificates can be obtained by paying prescribed fee.

Marriage Registration under Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriage Act

For registering marriages under Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriage Act, marriages solemnized under personal law are eligible. The marriage thus solemnized can be registered within 90 days without any fine and with fine they can be registered up to 90 – 150 days. Marriage proof, residence proof, age proof certificate copies and ID cards of at least two witnesses shall be submitted along with 4 passport size photographs of bride and bridegroom.

Special marriage registration and issuing marriage certificates

Marriages that are solemnized before the Registering officer can be registered under special marriage act in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai in Tamil Nadu. For this the age of bride shall be 18 and bridegroom shall be 21 years of age. Either the residence of bride or the residence of bridegroom shall be in the jurisdiction of the registering office. The office will give a 30 month notice for the intended marriage and if no objections are received in this period, the marriage will be registered.

Marriage certificates are issued for the marriages registered under Indian Christian Act. These are issued by the licensee under the act or the priest who solemnized the marriage. The certificates are issued in the office of Inspector General of Registration, 100, Santhome High Road, Chennai – 28.
