Dasara – state festival of Karnataka | Vadayars started the tradition of celebrating Dasara from Mysore Maharaja Palace

Vadayars started the tradition of celebrating Dasara

Karnataka celebrates Dasara festival as the state festival and this tradition was started in 15th century by Vijayanagara kings. Vadayars started the tradition of celebrating this festival from the Mysore Maharaja Palace.  The kings couple offer pooja to the goddess on the Chamundi hills and as Chamundeswari had killed Mahishasura, the name of the city is kept as Mahishasura and it changed in to Mysore. All the people in the city take part in these celebrations and the foreigners plan a trip to Mysore in this season. They celebrate this festival as gods won the battle against the devils. The first Vadayar had celebrated the festival in 1610 and this is 400th dasara in Karnataka. They had constructed separate darbar in the palace during the rule of third Krishnaraja in 1805.
