UPSC recruits candidates in to these posts.  Candidates will have to write Civil services, Engineering Service exam, and Special class Railway Apprentice exam for these posts.

Special class Railway Apprentice, SCRA: This exam allows the candidate to complete the Mechanical Engineering course for free.  Rs.9,100 is paid as stipend every month during the course.  A post in class-1 category is given to the candidates on successful completion of the course.  Salary will be Rs.25,000 in the beginning.  Training for 1 year is provided in London as part of the course.  Birla Institute of Technology, BIT, Mesra issues the BTech – Mechanical engineering degree to successful candidates.

Notification for above is generally released for every two years in February.  Exam will be conducted in July.  Total number of seats is 50.  Selection is made through a written exam and interview.  Qualification is 50 percent marks in Intermediate in MPC stream.  Age of the candidates should be between 17 and 21.

Written exam: Written exam consists of 3 papers for a total of 600 marks.  Paper-a-1 is General Ability test, Paper-2 is Physical science, and Paper-3 is Mathematics.  Each paper carries 200 marks.  Another 200 marks are allotted to interview.
