Competition is high when aspiring to get a seat at prestigious institutes. The best way is to appear for nation level entrance exams and to secure a better rank. One such exam is ‘GATE’. Its full form is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Rank in this examination helps to get a seat in M. Tech course at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru/Bangalore, and in various Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) spread across the nation.

This rank is the basis for giving admission in to post graduate courses of engineering, architecture and pharmacy in famous technological educational institutes across the nation. This test is meant for generalizing the study methods followed by various engineering colleges across the nation. Representatives from seven IITs form as GATE Committee. As such, responsibility of conducting 2011 GATE exam is given to IIT Madras.

Candidates who have passed in BE/ B. Tech / AMIE or equivalent tests or PG in mathematics or sciences are eligible to appear for this exam.

How to prepare for GATE exam?

  • Applicants should allot four hours of preparation daily for four months. Of the four hours allotted daily, three hours should  be for preparation and the remaining one hour for practice.
  • One should study in a planned manner by accumulating GATE study materials and standard books for every subject.
  • Self test has be conducted in every subject, every Sunday to test the preparation done till that time. Doubts have to be resolved by discussing with friends and teachers.
  • It is necessary to  practice previous question papers of GATE, IES, Civils and other related exams.
  • Prepare notes from the concepts learnt from text books. This notes will be useful at the time of revision before the GATE exam.
  • Appearing for model tests, before the main GATE exam, will help in securing better rank.
  • Subject skills can be improved by taking GATE coaching. As a result, one can get good rank.
  • It is better to get GATE coaching where there are good faculty options and limited number of students.
  • It is good to prepare at the GATE training institutes which offer free training for the poor students.
  • Test series will be conducted by the GATE coaching centers, from December 2010 to the GATE exam date. It is better to appear for these exams.
  • Slight changes have been made in GATE 2010. 15 marks are allotted for general aptitude. They will be like CAT, Bank exams. Practicing  general aptitude will not only be useful for GATE, but also for Bank PO’s, CAT, Software Job Tests also.

Tips to be followed by students appearing for GATE exam

  • Duration of this exam is three hours.
  • By arriving at the exam hall before one hour, one can avoid tension and can attempt the  exam well.
  • First answer the questions which you know them well. Post pone answering the questions to the end of the exam, which takes much time. It is not good to spend more time on questions which are not known.  It is not at all good to answer the unknown questions because of negative marking.
