In the recent list, released by Google, of frequent searches that are made on online search engines, Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is getting increased popularity. IRCTC stood among companies like Nokia, SBI, Sony, Samsung, BSNL and others. Information like seat reservation (PNR enquiry), ticket fares, train timing and other details can be had from IRCTC website. Though prices of online tickets are a bit high, many people are opting for online booking because of the convenience and easy availability of tickets. Tickets can be booked online using credit cards, debits cards and net banking of different banks.

Increased usage of e-tickets

  • Indian Railway department has launched i-tickets in 2002. In the starting stages tickets were sent to passengers through courier but this service was restricted to some cities only. Gradually e-ticketing was spread to many regions.
  • E-Tickets have been issued since 2006. Facility of taking the printout after booking is provided.
  • With the introduction of e-ticket, usage of online booking has increased. Nearly 7.2 Crores of users have booked tickets online in 2009—10 year and 98% of them have opted for e-tickets.
  • IRCTC also offers the facility to cancel the tickets in case of cancellation of the tour. This facility is very much useful to the passengers.

How to book tickets online?

  • Create ID and password in IRCTC website using appropriate details.
  • When we are in use of railway services, we need to login to IRCTC website using those login details.
  • We have to enter the details of departure and destination place, date of journey and others, and thereby we can get the required information.
  • To book tickets, any one option among i-tickets / e-tickets should be selected. Users can also use tatkaal facility also.
  • Details of available number of seats, ticket fare, duration of journey and other details can also be known from the website.
  • Ticket can be booked online by filling the relevant forms and paying by debit/credit card or net banking.
  • Not only details of e-tickets, users can also have the information of different tourist places, offers from railway department, different packages and additional information. Thereby, we can make our plan our journey perfectly and comfortably.
