Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a poet, author, educator, philosopher and a social reformer.  He rationalized and simplified the Bengali script for the first time after 1780.  Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born in Birsingha village in a poor family.  Though he spent his childhood in poverty, he could get book knowledge.  As his father was a Sanskrit teacher, Vidyasagar also took up the same profession.  His education began in the village and continued in Calcutta as his father has joined in a job in Calcutta.

Ishwar Chandra passed Hindu Law in 1839 and received the title ‘Vidyasagar’.  After two years he was appointed as   head of Sanskrit department in Fort William College.  There he started his struggle to teach Sanskrit to people of all religions and also to encourage women education.  He established 20 new schools when he was working as a School Inspector.  After sometime Fort William college was closed.  He became a founder member of Calcutta University.  He fought for the betterment of women in the society.  Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a large hearted and eminent human being.  He used to help poor people in the society.  He used to teach patience and humility to children as well as elders.  Swami Vivekananda was also greatly influenced by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.
