JMET is conducted to admit students in various Management programs offered by IITs | JMET Application procedure is through online

Special features of IITs are the Faculty, who are qualified and experienced, applying the subjects taught in the course with industry.  IITs which are famous for Engineering are offering quality education courses in management.  Mumbai, Delhi, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkey IITs are offering two year Management Postgraduate programs.  IISC, Bangalore which is famous for science courses is also offering management programs.  Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) is conducted to admit students in to these courses.

The students who want to pursue management in IITs have to qualify in JMET.  Applications are to be submitted to various IITs after qualifying in the entrance test.  Qualifications, experience and rules of admission are different for various IIT institutes.  So the students should have the qualifications prescribed by various institutes along with JMET. Candidates should check all these details before applying for JMET.  Based on the JMET score, the candidates are filtered.  Group discussions and interviews are held at a later stage.

JMET exam format

JMET exam in conducted in objective/multiple choice format.  Duration of the exam is 3 hours. Exam consist 120 questions.  25% negative marks are given for wrong answers.  There would be four divisions in the question paper.  Each division consist 30 questions for 30 marks.  Candidates should secure good marks and also should get minimum marks in each division.  The four divisions are –

Verbal communication: Language skills of the candidate are tested in this division.  Questions are asked on grammar and the expression used in business world.  These questions can be answered easily by reading the analysis on various business topics daily and studying communicative English grammar.

Logical reasoning: This division consist questions from Analytical Reasoning and Argument Analysis. Candidates have to pay special attention to this division as the questions may confuse the candidates.

Quantitative ability: This division tests the basic knowledge of the candidates in Mathematics.  Questions are asked on topics like Numbers, Operations, HCF, LCM, Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratios, Logarithms, Progressions, Elementary Geometry, Mensuration, Basic Trigonometry, Set Theory etc.  These are asked keeping in view the knowledge of Mathematics required in Business Management.

Data Interpretation: Depending on the information given in the question, candidates have to recognize the right proofs and explanations.  The understanding of information by the candidates is estimated.  The information is given in various forms like Tables, Histograms, Pie charts, Graphs and Diagrams.

Courses and Institutions

IITs are offering management programs with various names.  Educational qualifications and experience are different for various programs.

  • IIT Mumbai:  Shailesh J Mehta School of Management is offering ‘Master of Management’ course.
  • IIT Delhi:  MBA courses are offered with latest specializations.  They are MBA (Management Systems), MBA (Telecommunication Systems Management).
  • IIT Kanpur: Department of Industrial and Management Engineering is offering MBA course in IIT Kanpur.
  • IIT Kharagpur: Vinod Gupta School of Management in this organization is offering MBA course.  Weightage is given to those candidates who have work experience in industries.
  • IIT (Madras, Roorkey):  Department of Management Studies is offering MBA courses in both these Institutions.

Application procedure

Application can be submitted only through online for JMET.

  • Online application procedure starts from 6th September, 2010.
  • Last date for submitting application online is 8th October, 2010.
  • Exam date is 12th December, 2010.
  • Results will be announced on 3rd January, 2011.
  • Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada are the exam centers in Andhra Pradesh.  Other details can be had on the websites of IIT and IISc.
