Karwa Chauth is the festival celebrated in north India by married women. Married women keep fast on this day and pray God for long life, prosperity and well being of their husbands. In the evening a get-together is arranged where all the members of the family and friends gather at a place. Women watch the moon and then break their fast. Festivals like this allow the new daughter-in-law of to get close to their in-laws. Karwa Chauth is celebrated nine days before Diwali. Married women old and young alike, begin their fasting before sunrise at around 04.00 am and have water or food only after watching the moon at night.
