Many thousand years back, before the creation started the world was full of water.  One day a small island appeared floating on the water.  A flower bloomed on the island.  A small boy came out of it and stood on the island.  He was the Sun.  The creation began with his light.  He goes in to the lotus again when it is night.  This is an Egyptian story about Lotus.  Lotus is very prominent in Hindi Mythology.  Lotus is the seat for many of the Hindu Gods.

  • The age of Lotus is not known. In the tomb of Tutankman which was discovered in 1922 in Egypt it was found that violet colour lotus were arranged around the mummy.  This tomb is of a few thousand years old.
  • In Buddhism lotus is the symbol of pure soul, utterance and mind.
  • These are found in white, red, blue, violet and pink.
  • Lotus can control its temperature as per the surroundings to attract insects.
  • Each lotus gives 2000 seeds.  These seeds stay intact even after 100 years.  Scientist found seeds of 1000 years also.
  • The stems, petals and roots of these flowers are used in cooking in many countries.  Roots of this flower contain fiber and vitamin C.
  • Lotus is used in preparing medicines in China.
  • Lotus is the national flower of not only India but also Bangladesh.
