The love story of Baj Bahadur and Rupmati of Mandu is very famous | Rewa kund was constructed to supply water continuously to Rupmati’s palace

Baj Bahadur and Rupmati of ManduBaj Bahadur who was the son of Malwa king Nuzhat Khan ruled Malwa from 1555 to 1562.  Baj Bahadur was more interested in music and other arts than in the administration of the kingdom.  He did not showed any interest to have a powerful army.  The love story between him and the Rajput singer Rupmati is very famous.  When Baj Bahadur went for hunting he saw Rupmati singing and enjoying with her friends.  He admired her beauty as well as her song and brought her to ‘Mandu’, the capital of Malwa. (It is in Madhya Pradesh now).

Rupmati and Baj Bahadur married as per Hindu and Muslim traditions.  Rupmati refused to live in the palace and a special palace was built for her.  Rewa kund reservoir was also constructed to supply water continuously to her palace.  But their love story ended in tragedy.  In 1561 the army of Akbar attacked Malwa under Adam Khan.  Baj Bahadur fought with the Mughals with his small army.  But he was defeated on 29th March 1561 in the Sarangpur war.  He escaped to Khandesh.  When Rupmati heard that Adam Khan is occupying Mandu, she consumed poison and died.  Baj Bahadur took the help of Khandesh king and Beror king to defeat Mughal army and he could capture Malwa again.  He ruled Malwa for a very short period.  He was again defeated by the Mughals in 1526. Baj Bahadur roamed many kingdoms as a refugee and surrendered to Akbar in November, 1570.
