There are now many new branches introduced in Engineering.  Naturally there is doubt arising in the aspirants about the selection of a better branch.  There are some engineering courses which help for the growth of the career as well as growth in the income.  Success in any field is possible only with interest.

Materials and Metallurgy

Materials and Metallurgy Engineers are the people who find out the characteristics of minerals and create new minerals from them.  Deposits of coal and iron are abundant in India.  So this field is going to be beneficial even in long run.  Who work hard in research field will have better opportunities.  International companies are also showing interest in research in related fields.

Chemical metallurgist is involved in purifying the ores and separating them.  The task of physical metallurgist is to recognize the characteristics and other features of the minerals. Mechanical Metallurgists supervise the casting, rolling, forging and drawing works.  Engineers create new materials with directed weight and strength.  Examining the materials and evaluating them is also a part of their job.  As a part of this test, the newly created materials are being used in construction of aero planes.

Metallurgists can choose Chemical engineering or mining.  Then they will have work with mining engineers.  Physical metallurgists can select designing of products using refine metals and related processing.  Air, medicines and energy fields need high quality materials.  Metallurgists with special skills are required for these fields.

Metallurgists have opportunities in industries and research centers.  They can get jobs in the processing divisions of iron, steel, nickel, tin, copper, zinc, and aluminum and brass industries.  Foundries, rolling mills and fabrication industries need their services.   Automobiles, aero plane, engineering workshops and related research centers provide jobs for them.  Tata Iron and Steel Company at Jamshedpur, Durgapur, Bhilai, Rourkela and Bokaro steel plants recruit metallurgists.

Materials Engineering has also developed now.  In addition to the traditional minerals, the usage of ceramics, polymers, electrical and magnetic materials has increased.  For the selection of materials and comparing it with advanced engineering professional services are needed.

Environmental engineering

India is one of the ten countries which are polluting water with industrial wastes. This course is a mixture of civil and chemical engineering.  The institutions which are offering this course at the under graduate level are also limited.  Earlier this course consisted subjects like water purifying, managing wastes which are in liquid and solid forms were taught.  But with the changing times, studying air and soil pollution, dangerous wastes etc has become necessary.  This is interdisciplinary.  This is designed to create good environment to humankind.

Environment engineers mainly concentrate on air, water and soil.  Many new industries and projects are coming up so the services of Environmental engineers are becoming necessary.  Environmental engineers are being recruited while designing products from recycling materials.  Environmental engineers are getting job opportunities both in government and public sectors.  Salaries are between Rs.12,000 to 15,000 in government sector and more than Rs.35,000 in private sector.


Twenty first century belongs to Nanotechnology. This is the opinion of scientists.  The effect of Nanotechnology can be felt in manufacturing of everything. Clothes which can prevent the negative effects of chemical and biochemical weapons on the body can be designed with Nanotechnology.

‘Nano’ means very small.  The main aim of Nanotechnology is to create an article with less weight and less expense which should be strong and valuable.  Such articles are useful in Science and Technology. Many changes have come in physical, chemical, magnetic, optical, mechanical and electrical properties because of Nano.  Creating very small things and thereby benefitting from them is the integral part of this process.  Many new things can be invented in the fields of bioscience, medical science, environmental science, environment, electronics, cosmetics, paints and security.

Involvement of Nano is present in every invention of Engineering.  One should have a strong hold on science to study Environmental engineering.  Physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology has to be studied as part of the course.  Pursuing M.Tech or PhD in physics, chemistry, maths and biology is also possible after this course.  After completing research Environmental Engineers get a salary of Rs.20,000 to 5,00,000 per  month depending on the subject of their study.
