Remarkable growth of Communication and IT sector could be observed in the recent years. India has also introduced Mobile Number Portability – MNP in the year to help the further improve the growth rate of communication sector.

Mobile Number Portability is a facility that allows the user to change from one mobile service provider to another mobile service provider in the same licensed service area. It is also possible to retain the same phone number with new SIM card given by the mobile service provider. Except in Jammu and Kashmir, North east service areas and in Assam the portability will be completed within seven day from applying. The process will take 15 days to complete in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and north east service areas.

All the pre-paid and post-paid customers of who are subscribers of any service providers can opt for Mobile Number portability. They should have no outstanding bill payments at the time of requesting for porting. Application for porting can be submitted ninety days from the date of activation of taking the connection. The subscriber has to apply for porting in the respective Licensed Service Area. The mobile number for which the porting is requested should not have been prohibited by any court of Law.

Mobile number portability in India is a procedure that includes the following steps. The subscriber needs to go to the mobile service provider’s service centre or authorized dealer to apply for mobile number porting. There the subscriber need to fill the Service Registration Form and has to pay the porting fees. He then has to request the donor operator for Unique Porting Code from the mobile number for which portability is sought through an SMS. The SMS message should be SMS PORT followed by the ten digit mobile number and sent to 1900. The candidate then will receive UPC porting code. The subscriber then will have to fill the UPC in porting application. The Unique porting code that is allotted to the applicant will be valid for a period of fifteen days. Later the subscriber who applied for porting will be issued a new SIM card by new service provider. TRAI has decided that the fee for mobile number portability is Rs. 19. But some operators waive off the fee to attract new customers and BSNL is one of them.

The request for mobile number portability can also be cancelled within twenty four hours from making the request. If the porting has not been done in the specified time period of 19 days, the subscriber can file their complaint with TRAI. To shift to a new operator, there should be a gap of at least ninety days. The subscriber can only make a request for porting once to different mobile service providers.
