National talent search examination…. Selection process, Reservation, Results and Important dates

This is introduced by the national council of education research and training in 1963. This test is conducted to bring out the talent of the students and it covers sciences, social sciences, medicine, engineering and law courses. The scholarship is given to the students who excelled and the scholarship is given up to P.HD level in sciences, social sciences and law courses. In the case of professional courses like engineering and medicine, the scholarship is applicable up to PG stage.


All the students studying eighth standard can write this exam and 1000 students are selected in every field. These 1000 students are given a scholarship of Rs.500 every month.


In every 1000 scholarships, there is 15% reservation for SCs and 7.5% for STs. Handicapped are given 3% reservation.

Selection process:

The exam is conducted in two phases and they are stage 1 and stage 2.


This exam is conducted in all the states according to the region wise. Those who passed this exam are eligible for the stage2 exam.

Stage 2:

This exam is conducted by the national council of research and training for the students who passed stage 1 exam. There are two parts in this exam and they are mental ability test and scholastic ability test. Questions from maths, science and social subjects are asked in this exam.

Indian students studying abroad:

Indian students those who are studying abroad need not write the stage 1 exam and they can directly enter the stage 2 exam by following the rules of national talent test.

Important dates:

  • The last date to apply for the stage 1 exam is August 3rd, 2010.
  • Exam date for nagaland, mizoram, meghalaya and Andaman and nicobar island students is November 20th , 2010
  • The exam date for other states is November 21st, 2010.
  • A stage 2 exam is conducted on May 8th, 2011.
  • The exam fee for the stage 1 exam is according to the notification given in the national talent test.
  • There is no fee for the stage 2 exam conducted by the NCERT


The stage 1 exam results are declared by the various states in the regions and the stage 2 exam results is given by the NCERT.
