Registering deaths is required for many matters such as settlement of inheritance, claiming family allowances. Insurance claims, social security benefits etc.  In Sikkim, death certificate can be obtained from the Chief Registrar and he is assisted by the Additional Chief Registrar and Deputy Chief Registrar.  In districts, the concerned authority for issuing death certificates is the District Registrar (Chief Registrar Officers).  In hospitals, death reporting can be made to Medical Superintendent or Registrars.  At the grass root level, Anganwadi workers appointed by the government are given the responsibility of registering the deaths.  There are nearly 32 registration centres in Sikkim.

Registration of every death is mandatory in Gangtok, Pelling, Gezing in Sikkim under Registration of Births & Deaths Act, 1969. Death certificates will be helpful to prove the time and date of death, for claiming property, insurance and social security benefits etc.  The deaths shall be registered within 21 days from the date of submitting the application. The forms for death registrations are available free of cost in hospitals, PHCs and other institutions.

For obtaining death certificate in Sikkim, if the death occurred at home, the head of the house shall report the matter to concerned authorities.  If the death occurred in hospital the incharge shall take the responsibility of reporting the matter. The service of obtaining death certificates in Sikkim shall be utilized during the working hours ie from 10 AM to 4 PM on working days.  Death certificate in Sikkim is issued within 21 days but for delayed registration, late fee has to be paid.
