Deaths in Tamil Nadu have to be reported within 21 days to the concerned authority and death certificates can be obtained thereafter.  Concerned authorities for obtaining death certificates are Municipalities, corporations and special village panchayats.

Head of the family or any family member can apply for death certificates in Madurai, Chennai, Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.  Deaths occurred in medical institution are reported by the registration authority to registering authority.  Deaths occurred in houses can be reported by any of the family members. If the deaths are registered after prescribed period, the registration is done accepting penalty up to one year.  Beyond one year, judicial order from Magistrate would be needed to register the death.

Death registers are maintained by Taluk offices for two years and then are transferred to Sub-Registrar’s office.  Death certificate in Tamil Nadu can be obtained from Taluk Office till two years and after that they have to be obtained from the Sub-registrar.  In Towns/municipal areas, the death registers are maintained by Town/municipal office. The application forms are available in concerned offices in Tamil Nadu.
