Obtain driving Licence in Maharashtra


Learner’s driving permit

For obtaining learner’s licence in Maharashtra, persons who have attained the age of 16 years are eligible and these can drive vehicles below 50 cc with parents consent. Those who are 18 years can apply for driving personal vehicles above 51 cc and those who are over 20 years can apply for driving licence to drive transport vehicles.

Application in Form 1 and Form 2 need to be submitted to obtain driving licence in Maharashtra for non-transport vehicles and Form 1A and Form 2 for transport licence. The applicants need to submit the following documents as along with the application to obtain learner’s licence in Maharashtra.

  • Proof of age
  • Proof of address
  • Form 1 A medical certificate
  • Three passport size photographs
  • Rs. 30 for each class of vehicle for which the licence is required

Permanent driving licence

Permanent driving licence in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur in Maharashtra can be obtained by those who held the learner’s licence for thirty days. A test of competence to drive will be conducted by the licensing authority. Application for permanent driving licence shall be submitted in Form 4 and the documents that should accompany the application are –

  • Form 4
  • Learner’s license
  • Age proof
  • Address proof
  • Three passport size photos
  • Driving school certificate if the applicant is applying for transport vehicle licence
  • Fee specified
  • Documents of the vehicle on which the driving test is conducted

Rs. 50 is the test fee for obtaining permanent driving licence in Maharashtra, Rs. 40 for ordinary licence and Rs. 150 for computerized licence. Permanent driving licence would be issued to the persons who are successful in test of competence in driving. Those who could not get through can appear for the test after seven days.

Driving licence renewal

Driving license holders need to apply for renewal of driving licence before its expiry and thirty days grace period is given for the renewal. After five years, the licence would not be renewed. Persons who hold a driving licence issued by other states of India, they should produce no objection certificate from the authority who issued the driving licence.

Documents that should be enclosed with the application for renewal of driving licence in Maharashtra are Form 9, driving licence, medical certificate, physical fitness declaration in Form 1 and three passport size photographs.

International Driving Licence

International driving licence is issued by Maharashtra licensing authorities for those who have valid driving licence, passport and Visa. Certified copies of all the above have to be submitted along with the application for international driving licence along with medical certificate in Form 1A, prescribed fee of Rs. 500. If there is any change in the address of residence of the applicant he needs to change it before applying for the international driving licence. The applicant should be personally present before licensing authority for obtaining international driving licence.
