Obtain caste certificate in Tamil Nadu


The system of issuing caste certificates in Tamil Nadu was launched in the year 1988. With the intention of reducing pressure on the persons and the officials, permanent community certificates are issued in Tamil Nadu including in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai. These certificates can be used for employment and education purposes.

The procedure for obtaining caste certificate in Tamil Nadu includes making the request to the Tahsildars.  The application can either be submitted along with the recommendation of Revenue inspector or without it. The Tahsildar will indicate the time when the certificate will be issued either by him by Deputy Tahsildar. The certificate will be issued to all the communities except scheduled tribes. Caste certificate for scheduled castes will be issued in a maximum time limit of 30 days.

When a caste certificate application is received by the officials, they would publish the list in the notice boards of Taluk or Panchayat Union Offices and Chavadi in the villages and ask for any objection from the public. The caste of the applicant in Tamil Nadu would be determined with reference to community certificate of the parents, school certificate, open enquiries in the village, verification of residence of the applicant etc.
