chera kingsThe Chera kings were among the main dynasties in the south India and this is very ancient dynasty. They were also discussed in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Their kingdom was in Kerala, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Kongunadu and Malabar Coast. There was influence of the Chera kings on the Indian history and they always fought with the Cholas and pandyans. The second chera king married the chola princess and extended the kingdom up to Nagapattnam.  The Chera kings had the relations with the Satavahanas and they had the business deals with Rome and Greek countries.

The Cheras fought along the side of the pandavas during the Mahabharata war and they used to call them as keralaputras during the time of Asoka. The Chera kings were mentioned in the Tamil literature also and they were defeated by the pallavas in the 4th century. The Chera dynasty was established by Perumchottu Utiyan Cheralatan and the popular king among Cheras was Imayavaramban Nedum Cheralatan. Their glory was spread till the himalayas and the Chera kings who were suppressed in the fourth century were again seen in 12th century. The people were happy in the rule of chera kings and their rule was there up to 15th century. The dynasty was extended in all the areas during the rule of Imayavaramban.
