Queen Chennamma ruled Keladi for 25 years from 1671 – 96 | Aurangazeb sent his son Azamath Ara to invade Keladi

Queen Chennamma

Rani Chennamma had ruled Keladi for 25 years (1671 – 96). Keladi kingdom is in Malnad area in Karnataka.  Somasekhar was the king of Keladi and he married Chennamma who did not belong to any royal family.  Later she learnt many things about the running of the kingdom.  And also learnt to use the weapons.  She became the queen of Keladi when her husband was ill.  She was an able ruler.  She suppressed the conspirators in her own kingdom and saved the kingdom from enemy kings.

Aurangazeb who captured all the kingdoms of North India began his invading South India.  He did not leave Keladi also.  Showing the reason that she gave shelter to Rajaram, the son of Shivaji, Aurangazeb prepared to attack Keladi.  Many Hindu kings refused to give shelter to Rajaram fearing Aurangazeb.  But Queen Chennamma did not fear him and  gave shelter to Rajaram.  She kept her army ready to fight with Aurangazeb.

Before the war with Mughals began, Rajaram returned to Jinji fort.  Azamath Ara, son of Aurangazeb came with the army to attack Keladi.  Mughal army could not fight with the Keladi soldiers as it was raining cats and dogs.  Many Mughal army officers were captured by Keladi army.  When Aurangazeb learnt that Rajaram is in Jinji fort, he wanted his army to come back.  Aurangazeb made a treaty with Chennamma and praised her.  Rajaram also thanked her for giving him shelter.

The name of Queen Chennamma remained in the history of Karnataka and the History of India as an able ruler and a bold queen.
