Rain  water Harvesting

One cannot find a way for rain water to soak in to the earth in the concreted jungles today.  92% of the rain water is just flowing out of the cities. As a result of this the ground water levels are falling to lower levels.  Rain water on the roads and water coming down from the roof tops of the houses is going into the drainages.  With growing population and construction o foot paths and roads there is little chance for rain water to soak in.  This is causing a water shortage and hundreds of rupees are    being spent to buy water from tanks.  Rain water conservation is our immediate course of action.  Rain water pits can be constructed in the available space without damaging the structure of the building to collect rain water, thereby increasing the ground level water.

Rain water pits preparation

To get water from the bore pump in your house throughout the year, dig a pit of 6 feet long 4 feet width and 8 feet deep.  Do not use cement on any side of the pit.  Fill the bottom up to 4 feet with granite of 40 mm or 60 mm and stones of our palm size.  Next 3 inches should be filled with small stones and sand.  Leave the remaining 1.7 feet just like that.  Construct a wall around the pit.  Height should be 6 inches or feet.  Take measures to carry down water from roof water to the pit.

Dig a pit of 6 feet long, 6 feet and width and 6 feet deep.  Make small for every the bore pvc pipe for every 3 feet.  Wrap a steel mesh around the pipe so that mud will not enter into the pipe.   Fill the bottom up to 4 feet with granite of 40 mm or 60 mm and stones of our.  Next 3 inches should be filled with small stones and sand.  Construct a wall of 1 feet height around the pot.  Use a 6 inch pipe to collect water from the roof tops and divert the rainwater into this pit.

Some precautions

Keep the rooftops of the houses clean in rainy season. There should be not papers, leaves or plastic covers in the pit.  Rain water pit the cleaner, the better. If the rain water pit all ready exists, take out the 3 inches sand and wash it in water. Use it again to soak rain water into the pit.  This helps the ground water level to increase.

People who are interested to construct rain water pits can get guidance from ‘Save’.  It has influence people to construct rain water pits in 250 houses. To increase ground water level in coming two years time is the target of this organization, the representatives has informed.  They can be contacted on 040-27654336.
