People who want to register their vehicles in Sikkim need to approach the Motor Vehicle Inspector.  He will give the required forms for registration of vehicles after receiving the payment of Rs. 40.  Depending on the category of the vehicle, whether it is a private vehicle, taxi or goods carrier, he will ask the applicant to produce band receipt for certain amount.  The applicant need to obtain a certificate that states that sales tax for new vehicle has been paid from the Commercial tax office.

For vehicle registration in Sikkim, Two copies of pencil imprints of Chassis number also to be submitted along with the application.  Along with all these documents, the applicant should approach the Motor Vehicle Inspector who is authorized to allot registration numbers to vehicles.  The applicant will be given a receipt that contains those details such as the engine number, chassis number, registration number and validity date for final registration.

When the receipt with vehicle registration number if given to the applicant by Motor Vehicle Inspector in Sikkim, they can display the number on their vehicles.  A duly filled form with all the details of the vehicle and the owner will be given to the applicant before the expiry date by the department.  Applicants shall produce this form in RTO’s computer section.  The details mentioned in the form are entered in the computer and a smartcard is printed.  This is issued to the applicant of vehicle registration.  Applicant need to pay separate fee for the smartcard in Sikkim based on the category of vehicle registration.
