Selection procedure for Courses offered by IIA | Qualifications required for PhD program, Integrated MSc – PhD, Integrated MTech – PhD
The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is a prestigious institution in India, in research fields like Astronomy, Astrophysics. Department of Science and Technology is providing funds to this institution. IIA has its main campus located at Bangalore and 4 observatory centers at Kodaikanal, Kavalur (Tamil Nadu), Gowribidanur (Karnataka), Hanle (Ladakh).
Indian Institute of Astrophysics is offering various courses for the students who are interested in Astronomy. IIA is conducting IIAST, IIA screening test for admitting students every year. Selected candidates will get education as well as a chance to work in the IIA observatory centers. Notification for 2011 has been released and the details are given below.
PhD program: Candidates selected for this course are provided Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for first and second years, Senior Research Fellowship (CRF) for the next three years. Candidates have to register their names at Central University, Pondicherry for this program.
Qualification: MSc/Integrated MSc/ME/MTech/MPhil (In physics and other related subjects)
Integrated MSc – PhD (Physics, Astrophysics): IIA is conducting this course in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Open University. Selected candidates will have to study MSc residential course for two years at Indian Institute Astrophysics campus. Later they will get a chance to study PhD basing on merit.
Qualification: BSc (Maths, Physics)/BE/BTech (Physics and other related subjects)
Integrated MTech – PhD (Tech – Astronomical Instrumentation): Indian Institute of Astrophysics is conducting this course in collaboration with Calcutta University. Course duration is 2 years and the course contains 4 semesters. First two semesters has to be completed at Calcutta University. Final two semesters (Internship) has to be completed at Indian Institute Astrophysics Campus – Bangalore. The candidates can pursue their PhD based on the merit.
Qualification: MSc/Integrated MSc/BE/BTech (in physics and other related subjects).
Selection Procedure: Selection procedure will have two stages. In the first stage candidates have to appear for a screening test that is conducted country wide. Basing on their performance in the screening test, candidates will be called for an interview in the second stage. Some candidates are given exemption from appearing in the screening test depending on their performance in various national entrance tests. They are –
- Candidates who scored 96% in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) conducted for admission in to prestigious institutions in PhD (Physics).
- Candidates who scored 96% in GATE – Physics
- Candidates who are selected for UGC – CSIR – NET JRF.
