Shastri, the second Prime Minister of Republic IndiaAll the people remember Gandhi Jayanthi on October 2nd but Lal Bahadur Shastri was also born on the same day. Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister of India after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India. He was born in Mughalsarai in 1904 on October 2nd. His father, Sharada Srivastava Prasad died when Shastri was 1 ½ years old. His grandfather, Hazari Lal (father of Shastri’s mother, Ramdulari Devi) looked after him. His nick name was Nane and he was fond reading books. He used to read every book. He did not lose his self esteem even he was born in poor family. He should cross a river to go to the school and he did not have money. He doesn’t want to ask the person rowing the boat to go freely and so he used to swim across the river and reach the other bank.

Lal Bahadur Shastri got the degree as Shastri after completing the education in Kashi Vidyapeeth in Varanasi in 1926. He married Lalitha Devi in 1927 and Shastri accepted only a charkha and a few yards of khadi as dowry. Lal Bahadur had become national leader as his parents wanted him to become. Shastri attended the meeting conducted by Gandhiji in Varanasi. He decided to dedicate his life to the nation. He used to participate in the freedom fights quickly and he spent 9 years of life in jail during the freedom fight. Shastri was a great leader with simple lifestyle. He died on January 11th, 1966 in Tashkent in Russia. His wife had lodged a complaint that he was killed by poisoning while the authorities had declared his death due to heart stroke. He got Bharath Ratna award after his death and he was the first Prime Minister who got the Bharath Ratna award. His life is inspiration to the present political leaders.
