TRAI to impose penalties up to Rs. 2 lakh for telemarketers who violate rules | Phone number of the telemarketers can also be blocked by TRAI
Telecom Regulatory Authority is going to announce the guidelines on 30th November, 2010 to impose hefty penalties to those telemarketing companies who make unwanted calls to customers.Â TRAI has proposed to fine those companies against which there are more than 6 complaints and which are not following the rules.Â The fine could be up to Rs. 2 lakhs.Â Even after imposing penalty if the company is not following the rules, the number will be blocked.Â TRAI has also proposed to impose a fine of up to Rs. 10 lakhs on those Telecom service providers who violate the rules of â€˜Do not Callâ€™ registry for 4 times.Â It is also proposing to allot telemarketing companies with the phone numbers starting with â€˜700â€™ series.Â User can himself decide whether to answer the call or not.Â It is also the responsibility of service providers to see that telemarketers do not harass the subscribers TRAI sources said.
According to the new guidelines a penalty of Rs. 25,000 will be imposed for the first mistake by the telemarketing companies, Rs. 75,000 for the second mistake, Rs.80,000 for the third mistake, Rs.1.25 lakh for the fourth and Rs.1.50 lakh for the fifth mistake. If the company continues to commit the same mistake again and again, that particular company phone number will be blocked by all the service providers.Â All the telemarketing companies will have to pay a security deposit to the service providers.Â Till now penalty for telemarketers was only nominal of Rs.500 â€“ 1000.Â If the service provider violates the rules, Rs.1 lakh will be imposed for the first mistake, and Rs.4 lakh has to be paid for the fourth mistake.
