Motor vehicles department is the concerned department for registration of vehicles in the state of Maharashtra. The main activities of the department are registration of vehicles, issuing driving licenses etc.

For temporary registration of vehicles in Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur in Maharashtra, application shall be made in CR Tem. A. All the dealers of the vehicles shall deliver the motor vehicles with the temporary or permanent registration with RTO. Temporary registration of the vehicles is valid for a period of seven days and it can be extended up to thirty days. Registering authority has to give permission to further extend the validity of temporary registration of vehicle.

For registration new vehicle in Maharashtra, the application has to be made within 7 days from the date of delivery from the dealer. The vehicle has to be produced to RTO for inspection. After inspection vehicle tax is recovered and a registration number is allotted to the vehicle. Documents that shall be submitted along with application form for registration of vehicles in Maharashtra are Form 20, sale certificate given by dealer in Form 21. Transport commissioner’s approval, purchase invoice, temporary registration, address proof, insurance certificate, roadworthiness certificate, bill of entry for imported vehicles, customs clearance certificate for imported vehicles, entry and tax payment proof and prescribed fees.

Vehicles belonging to other states have to be registered in Maharashtra if they are kept for more than one year. A new registration number will be assigned. For this, NOC from original registering authority has to be furnished. The application shall be made in Form 20 and other documents to be submitted are Form 26, 33, 29, Form FT, AT, 28, payment proof of entry tax, affidavit of the owner stating that the vehicle is involved in accident, theft or crime, prescribed fee and all the valid documents of the vehicle.
