Waste management in India is one of the major problems that should be taken care of. Solutions for waste management are tough and the awareness among people for this problem is very less. Urban areas in India are producing large amounts of wastes and the disposal of this waste is becoming a big problems. This may further become more severe in the coming few years.

Waste management in India can be classified into four segments. They are municipal waste, industrial waste, bio-medical waste and electronic waste. Waste is generally collected by rag pickers, small time contractors and municipality employees pick up waste from the streets. This waste is dumped in the nearby water bodies or lands in outskirts of the cities leading to water and soil pollution.

Waste is generated from household, factories, dead animals, shops, hospitals etc every day. Waste management is the process in which the waste is collected, transported and processes. Municipal council or municipality of that particular place is responsible for proper waste management in India.

Waste management in India is important as the water and soil pollution the waste causes affects the health of people. Waste generation can be classified into two categories. Process oriented waste and pollution control oriented waste. Process oriented waste is generated in the process of making finished products from raw material. Pollution control oriented wastes are those residues which are generated due to pollution treatment methods. These can be in the form of gaseous or liquid states.

Waste can be classified into two types – biodegradable and non-biodegradable or toxic and non toxic. Biodegradable waste that comes from households like food, garden wastes can be recycled at home itself as a part of waste management in India. But non-biodegradable things like plastic covers cannot be recycled. The best one can do is to avoid usage of these materials.

Waste management in India is done in two processes. One is landfills. In this type of waste disposal, landfills are used for waste disposal. The landfill should be designed well to avoid other problems for environment. Incineration is another process of waste disposal in which combustion is used. The waste materials are burned leaves residue and gaseous material. In this method less land is sufficient for waste disposal.

Many types of solid wastes are generated in India which stresses the need of waste management in India. Agro waste or organic waste is generated due to rice, wheat straw, saw mill, banana stalk and jute, vegetable residue etc. Agro wastes can be managed by utilizing them in producing wall panels, printing paper, roofing sheets, fuel, cement, coil fiber etc. Industrial waste are inorganic and are caused by coal combustion residues, bauxite red mud and construction debris. These can be recycled as cement, tiles, concrete, ceramic product etc. Process wastes which are non hazardous come from lime stone waste, marble processing water, broken glass and ceramics etc. Hazardous waste comes from metallurgical residue, galvanizing water etc.

Waste management in India has become a problem as 0.2 to 0.6 kgs of garbage is generated per head each day in India. The landfill method used for waste disposal caused land pollution and contaminates ground water. Waste management in India has not been given enough importance and the municipalities are not well equipped to deal with large amount of waste collected every day.

Waste management in India should be give importance to reduce environmental pollution and health problems. The biodegradable or non-biodegradable waste collected by the municipalities should be separated. Biodegradable wasted can be composted which converts the wastes to humus. Humus improves the fertility of soil. Non-biodegradable waste should be further separated as toxic and non-toxic wastes. Toxic wastes if not disposed properly can pollute ground water and soil. So proper care has to be taken for disposing these materials. Plastic, metal, paper etc material should be recycled for further use. In some ways waste can be used as an energy source.

Waste-to-energy plants can be setup to deal with the problem of waste management in India. These are beneficial for the environment and also help to generate clean electric power. Electricity can be generating from waste in thermo chemical, biochemical and physicochemical methods. Waste-to-energy conversion reduces the generation of greenhouse gases. Dependence on fossil fuels can be reduced and electric power plant pollution can also be reduced.
