  • Because of high demand for seasonal fruits, traders and some time even farmers are using acetylene gas (Calcium carbide) for ripening of the fruits, even without waiting for natural ripening. It is called as ‘masala’ in common usage. Medical field experts are warning that this chemical is carcinogenic, capable of causing cancers. They may also cause swollen belly, ulcers in mouth and many other health problems.
  • In some places, fruits are dipped in ethephon liquid or usage of ethelene gas is seen. They can cause headache, giddiness, irritation, strain, make the person sleepy or drowsy and sometimes, fits may also be seen.
  • Usage of these artificial chemicals for the ripening of fruits will enhance the color but the taste and nutritional value of the same gets damaged.
  • Artificially ripened fruits are still more dangerous for children. Many researches are done on this aspect.

What are the fruits on which artificial chemicals are used for ripening?

Main types of fruits on which artificial chemicals used are banana and mango. In many cases, papaya, orange, apple and even guava are ripened using artificial chemicals. There are also doubts if water melons are also being injected with chemicals to be more reddish in color. Hence, central government is going for scientific researches to confirm the same.

What we can do to prevent this condition?

  • Don’t eat fruits without washing cleanly. They should be kept under water flow for few minutes for cleaning.
  • It is necessary to check the unseasonal fruits before buying, which are made available in the market even before the onset of the season.
  • Don’t trust the fruit which is even in color. It is better to avoid the fruits of same bunch which are equal in size and color.
  • Doubt the fruit if it develops black color marks on it within two or three days.
  • It is better to store fruits and vegetables separately. It is said that, tomatoes are store in this way to get good color.

Ban on these artificial chemicals is not clear. What does 44AA rule states?

44AA rule of ‘Food adulteration prevention act-1954 (PFA) states that usage of carbide for the ripening of fruits is banned. According to this rule, it is illegal to sell the fruits that are ripened artificially or made available for selling or gift or store the same for selling. Central government is giving order to the state governments to strictly implement this rule.

Central government makes it clear that presence of carbide packets at the place or premises of ripening the fruits can be taken as witness in the court. The process of identifying the packets of carbide is also clearly given to the officials by the central government.
