What is Hijri Calendar and what is the importance of Ramzan month | What are the traditions followed in Ramzan month?

Muslims worldwide celebrate their festivals according to Hijri Calendar only. This calendar has started 1431 years ago. Prophet Mohammad has left Macca for Madina at the age of 53 years. From that day onwards, Hijrit Calendar commences. The term Hijrit gradually turned into Hijri. There are 12 months in this calendar also. They are Moharram, Safar, Rabi-Ul-Avval, Rabi-Ul-Sani, Jamadil Avval, Jamadil Sani, Rajjab, Shabaan, Ramzan, Shavval, Jikhhaayida, Jil-Hijja. In this calendar, months are calculated based on lunar periods. Hence Muslims start fasting on the occasion of Ramzan  as soon as they see crescent shaped moon.

What is Ramzan?

Ramzan is the ninth month of Hijri Calendar. This word has its roots in Ibrani language. Ramzan means compromise. Muslims consider Ramzan month as the most sacred ones. Muslims firmly believe that those how fast these 30 days of Ramzan will get rid of all their bad deeds and will reach heaven after their death. In the month of Ramzan, Muslims fast during the day time and at the night time they will do Taravi Namaz (Prayers).

Traditions followed in Ramzan month….

  • In the month of Ramzan, daily five times namaz (prayers) will be done. After completing the namaz (prayers), 20 types of Taravi (Special prayers) are performed. During these prayers, Imam will read Quran.
  • Tahajud Namaz will be performed compulsorily at night time. This namaz will be performed by ladies also.
  • Donations and charities (Jakaat) will be done more in the month of Ramzan. Some part of the income will be donated to the poor in the name of Jakaat.
  • Fitra (Cloths and items) are also donated in this month.
  • Under any circumstances, devotees will not lie and will not tease others. They will be away from all kinds of bad habits.
  • Those who can afford, will go to Macca visit, called as Umra.
  • In the month of Ramzan, children from eight years to the people of old age, will perform fasting called Roza. In this time, they will not swallow even saliva.
