Permanent Account Number or PAN is a unique number given to each person who files their income tax returns. PAN is a ten digit number issued by the Income Tax Department in India on a laminate card. Mentioning of PAN number is compulsory for making any correspondence with any of the income tax authority in the country and also while filing the income returns.

PAN number is also needed while selling of purchasing immovable property, vehicles, hotel and restaurant bills which exceed certain amount, while travelling to foreign country or for central board of direct taxes transactions. It is also mandatory to mention the PAN number to get cell phone or landline phone connections. Mentioning of PAN number is also necessary to deposit money which exceeds Rs. 50,000 in a bank or post office.

Obtaining PAN number in India is not compulsory for people whose income is from agriculture and those who do not get any taxable income. They will just need to file a declaration in Form 61. Non residents of India and consular officers of central and state governments also need to take the PAN number.

Obtaining PAN number in India is a very simple procedure. The persons have to submit application in Form no. 94A. This form can be downloaded from National Securities depository Limited website or from the website of UTI Investor Services Ltd or the photocopy of the application can also be used for the purpose. For personally obtaining the application the applicants need to approach IT PAN Service Centers and TIN Facilitation Centers. Form No. 49AA has to be filled by the candidates who are not Indian citizens to apply for PAN card. Passport size photograph on color has to be attached to the form. The applicant needs to also mention the Income tax department assessing officer’s code on the application. This information can be obtained from the IT PAN service centers websites. Residence proof and identity proof are other documents that are to be submitted along with the application. After completely filling in the application, it has to be submitted at the IT PAN service centre of TIN Facilitation centre nearby and the requisite fee has to be paid.

For changing or corrections of data in PAN card the applicants can make a request through the internet. More details can be obtained from http://www.tinnsdl.com. For application made through online fee has to be paid through the nominated credit card. For these applications PAN will be issued on priority and the information will be sent to the applicants through email.
